Mitsubishi Fuso Deploys Gas Engine Cogeneration System at Kawasaki Plant

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC; headquarters: Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture; President and CEO Hartmut Schick) is pleased to announce that it has installed and begun operations of a gas engine cogeneration system* at the Kawasaki Plant. A cogeneration system is one that generates more than two types of secondary energy from primary energy continually and concurrently. It uses exhaust heat at the time of power generation in generating vapor to be supplied to the production lines, making more efficient use of energy possible.

MFTBC replaced a 20-year-old gas turbine-based cogeneration system with the new engine-based system, and simultaneously revamped the air conditioning system for several buildings in the plant to feed centrally from the new gas engine.

By using the newly deployed gas engine capable of producing 5,750 kW of electricity, approximately half the plant’s power demand can be covered. Moreover, a centrally controlled heating and cooling system that uses waste heat during power generation has been deployed. A hot-and-chilled-water network is used to cool and heat offices and production facilities across the Kawasaki Plant. The system was introduced into the head office Product Center, for which construction was completed on the plant’s premises at the end of December 2018. As the system not only supplies electricity to be used in the production process but utilizes exhaust heat at the time of power generation for cooling and heating concurrently, MFTBC will boost energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, thereby contributing to conserving the global environment.
